Today, Heart of Brevard announced the return of Halloweenfest, a favorite fall tradition in Downtown Brevard with a fresh addition: Spooky Stroll Downtown Open House.  The event will take place in Downtown Brevard on Saturday, October 30, 2021, from 10:00am-4:00pm.

“Halloweenfest is one of the community’s most anticipated and beloved events,” shares Nicole Bentley, Executive Director of Heart of Brevard. The event features local business activations, nonprofits, community groups and cultural attractions. “Halloweenfest continues to attract visitors to our area but has stayed true to its origins by bringing the community together for a fun, festive day in downtown, shares Bentley.”

Halloweenfest will feature traditional activities including the annual costume competition and parade, pet costume competition and parade, live music, pumpkin carving contest and downtown trick or treating. A free hula- hoop dance party and the Magic Book Bus are new additions to this year’s entertainment lineup.

Over thirty downtown businesses will participate in the Spooky Stroll Downtown Open House, encouraging attendees to visit galleries, shops, restaurants and other locations that have curated events and business promotions. Spooky Stroll will expand on the open house model introduced by Heart of Brevard in 2020, by closing downtown streets and encouraging businesses to activate the spaces in front of their storefronts that have traditionally been used for retail vendors.

“We’ve listened to the input from our downtown businesses and are making changes to our events to better benefit our business community, “ continues Bentley, “open streets create a safe, pedestrian environment for all participants and attendees, ensuring plenty of space for social distancing.”

A limited number of local nonprofit vendors will be accepted for this years’ event.  Vendors will be accepted on a first come basis. Nonprofit vendors are encouraged to apply early and must apply online by October 8th.  Vendor information and application are available here.

In addition to the festive lineup of activities and entertainment the event will serve up several local food vendors: Blunt Pretzels, FroZen Monkey, Southern Hawg BBQ & Catering and Feta Flav. Many downtown restaurants will serve signature dishes, snacks and free product samples. The Transylvania Farmers Market will offer local seasonal produce from 9:00am-12:00pm.

“At Highland Books, we are excited to plan something outside of the store for Halloweenfest,” says owner Leslie Logemann, “We appreciate the Heart of Brevard for thinking outside the box to make the event happen in a way that is safe and comfortable for everyone.”

Heart of Brevard is adding measures to ensure a safe event, including hand washing stations, frequent cleaning and sanitizing of activity areas, disposable masks and adhering to CDC guidelines. Heart of Brevard will continue to monitor the COVID-19 cases and trends in Transylvania County to determine the best strategies moving forward and make any warranted changes or cancellations to ensure the safety of the community.
