Stuart and Maggie Howe announced today that they have sold Brevard Clay after 3 years in their Heart of Brevard location, at 16 West Main Street. Carrie Blair, a resident of Pisgah Forest will take over the business, effective January 1, 2021.
Stuart refined his pottery technique and business skills while working at Mud Dabber’s Pottery where he dreamed up the idea of his downtown business. Brevard Clay opened in October 2017 as a studio, gallery and paint your own pottery experience. “Though Brevard has a tremendous number of outdoor activities, we felt we needed an indoor creative space for folks,” said Howe “having a paint your own pottery shop was a natural extension of my work as a potter and it filled the need for an indoor activity.”
The Howe family is thankful for the support of the Brevard arts community and residence as they have grown their business. “I cannot thank the community enough for years of enjoyment–watching families spend quality time being creative together–celebrating birthdays and special occasions is something that I will never forget,” shared Howe.
The Howe family is relocating to Charlottesville, VA where Maggie will start a career with a renewable energy startup. “I look forward to our family’s new adventures and to watching Brevard Clay grow and change,” said Howe. “I know that Carrie will help Brevard Clay evolve and thrive and I couldn’t be happier to be passing the baton to a person who has a vision and is ready to take the business to a new level of fun and success.”
Carrie moved to Pisgah Forest in 2018 from Virginia where she lived for 45 years. With an eclectic history that includes professional equestrian riding, water skiing and botany, Blair is excited to add business owner to her next creative calling. Blair said. “I knew that I wanted to take the next step in my career as a small business owner and this opportunity in the Heart of Brevard, couldn’t have been a more perfect fit.”
Blair will continue the tradition of Brevard Clay under new ownership and has plans to offer a wide variety of new programming including featured artists classes and workshops “I am excited to continue Stuart’s vision at Brevard Clay by hosting an artist in residence and paint your own pottery,” said Blair.
As an avid botanist and Tai-Chi instructor of 35 years she also plans to offer botany classes, field trips and Tai-Chi classes in the space. “I am grateful for the warm welcome from the local community, and the many organizations that help our downtown thrive,” said Blair.
Blair plans to close Brevard Clay for the month of January while making exciting upgrades and improvements to the space. “Brevard Clay will be coming back sparkling fresh and better than ever in early 2021, said Blair, “keep an eye out for our grand reopening in February!”
