Pisgah National Forest
Pisgah National Forest is a wonderland with mile-high peaks, cascading waterfalls, and dense, forested slopes. Spanning over 500,000 acres, it’s mostly hardwood forest filled with whitewater rivers, waterfalls, and hundreds of miles of trails. It all started with a land purchase in 1911, which helped create national forests in the eastern U.S. Pisgah is also home to the first forestry school in the country, now a historical site called the Cradle of Forestry. Plus, it has two of the first wilderness areas in the East. Spread across the Pisgah, Grandfather Mountain, and Appalachian Ranger Districts, this forest offers plenty of chances to explore and soak in the peaceful beauty of Western North Carolina’s mountains.

Gorges State Park
Gorges State Park is a gem with plunging waterfalls, rugged river gorges, sheer rock walls, and a wealth of rare species. Your adventure often starts at the visitor center, featuring impressive exhibits, picnic grounds, and shelters. The park is perfect for backcountry activities like distance hiking, backpack camping, trout fishing, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Covering 7,500 acres, the Gorges State Park includes part of the long-distance Foothills Trail, reaching Lake Jocassee at the South Carolina border. This relatively new state park continues to develop trails and campsites, offering even more opportunities to explore its beauty.

DuPont State Recreational Forest
DuPont State Recreational Forest, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains between Hendersonville and Brevard, North Carolina, spans 10,400 acres. It’s known for its stunning waterfalls, including four major ones on the Little River and several more on Grassy Creek. The forest started in 1996 with 7,600 acres generously sold by the DuPont Corporation. In 2000, it grew with two new property additions, including a beautiful 2,200-acre area home to High Falls, Triple Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

Headwaters State Forest
Headwaters State Forest is a unique place where conservation meets recreation for North Carolina residents. Managed by the N.C. Forest Service with help from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, this forest is a working land, open for public hunting. It showcases good forest stewardship and offers a space for education and low-impact outdoor activities.

Bracken Preserve
Bracken Preserve is a 395-acre property owned by the City of Brevard. Although the city has owned it for decades, it only opened to the public in July 2012. Located just west of downtown Brevard, you can see its mountain range from Main Street. Bracken Preserve borders Pisgah National Forest, with trails that connect to Forest Service Road 475-C, leading to the Fish Hatchery and the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education. You can camp or visit at night with the city’s approval.

Blue Ridge Parkway
Known as “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful stretch of twisty, ribbon roads that wind through the gorgeous scenery of Virginia and North Carolina. It’s 469 miles guide drivers between the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains and connects Shenandoah National Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the Pisgah National Forest. Running through the northern boundary of Transylvania County, the parkway has easy access from US276 and NC215.

Cycling
You came to the right place if your idea of fun is getting on two wheels. Whether you enjoy miles of tarmac, the challenge of a good gravel loop, or the thrill of a mountain descent, you’ll find plenty of options just a quick ride from the Heart of Brevard. Fuel your adventure with a meal at one of downtown’s many eateries, and enjoy a post-ride drink at one of our watering holes.

Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is an enjoyable experience for exploring the North Carolina mountains. With the many trails to adventure in Dupont State Forest and Pisgah Forest, you can revel in the beauty of the mountain trails and panoramic views from the saddle.
