Fourth of July Celebration

Uncle Woody Wants You!

July 4, 2008

Where else can you catch the hometown spirit, but in Downtown Brevard for Independence Day!

Fourth of July Celebration

We start off with a bang early in the morning with the 5K/10K Firecracker Run, organized by the Brevard Rotary Club.

Check out the Brevard Rotary's website for more details on the race and view the race map here

Contact Jeremy Purcell or call 828.553.3236 with any questions.

And by the end of the evening we are treated to a fireworks spectacular that will leave you wanting to spend the rest of your holidays in the mountains.  New community-wide sponsor partners of the Fireworks Extravaganza:  City of Brevard, Transylvania County, Brevard/Transylvania Chamber of Commerce, Transylvania Tourism Development Authority, and the Heart of Brevard.

During the day, downtown streets are closed to an overflowing crowd. This year, the Transylvania Community Arts Council hosts its 36th Annual Fine Arts & Craft Showcase. Not only is this a great way to showcase the artists of the region, but what better time to come and shop for those special gifts?!

Our Classic Automobile Show stretches for blocks and delights even the casual aficionado of 1920s to 1970s vintage vehicles. Organized by the Transylvania AACA, entertainers like Elvis and the Blues Brothers have been known to show up and croon while you swoon over these classic beauties.

The music doesn't stop with the cars. Our Courthouse Gazebo is center stage for day-long musical entertainment.

Downtown Brevard has its own special July 4th Parade. This one is just for children, and they can decorate and ride their favorite bicycles. Children can compete for the Most Patriotic, Most Creative, and the Most Unusual. The 1st and 2nd place winners of the three categories are awarded ribbons, while the first place winner in each category wins a gift certifcate to Sycamore Cycles.

If riding in the Bicycle Parade you must wear a helmet.

Other activities for children include Par-T-Perfect’s Kid Zone of Inflatables, Pisgah Climbing Wall, Little Blue Choo, and Eurobungee.

And an important tradition is the reading of the “Declaration of Independence." During the day’s festivities we take time to reflect on the incredible document created in 1776 that has made so much possible in our wonderful nation.

Brevard Community Band

The Brevard Community Band, under the direction of Jamie Hafner, is a summer band composed of 75+ volunteer musicians from Brevard and surrounding areas.  The band's membership ranges in ages from 16-80+ and is made up of both amateur and professional musicians.  The purpose of the band is to promote band music and provide an outlet for instrumentalists to express their musical talents.  The band is also a philanthropic organization by providing music scholarships to local students and grants to schools to promote music education.

This is not the ordinary community band.  The Brevard Community Band plays very high level and challenging band literature. The band has a large percentage of professional musicians including 16 band directors, 4 music professors and a world famous composer.  Maestro Hafner is highly renowned for his conducting and is one of the best tuba players in the country.

The band is supported by the Brevard business community, individual donors, and ticket sales to concerts.  The band will perform at the 140th celebration of the founding of Brevard on July 26th at noon in front of City Hall and on August 24th at the Porter Center at 3 pm.

Exit 4

Exit 4 is one of the newest jazz-fusion and R&B groups in Western North Carolina.

The band was formed in the Fall of 2007 by Vibraphonist Jason DeCristofaro and Guitarist Nelson Dougherty, who wanted to form a jazz group with a unique sound.  With the addition of Drummer Jerard Sloan and Bassist Cameron Austin, Exit 4 was able to tackle a variety of genres, including Bebop, Fusion, Funk, R&B, Ballads, and Traditional Jazz.

The band's sound could be described as sophisticated music, the language of jazz, infused with an infectious groove and modern sound.  Exit 4 members include:  Jason DeCristofaro on the Vibraphone, Nelson Dougherty on the Guitar, Jerard Sloan on the Drums, and, for today's performance, filling in on Bass for Cameron Austin, Mike Di Perna.

Ethos

This emerging band of Brevard locals has been evolving over the last two years.  Their sound is shaped in reggae infused rock and roll with a smattering of pop.  The melodies are catchy and the rhythm inspires the feet to move.

Ethos has been together for a little over two years now and in that time they have been able to put together their own sound. They have made some changes, but the core has stayed the same and have been able to build their repertoire.  Ethos is dedicated to sharing their music and will be gigging and recording much more in the near future. They sing the truths that they live and to grooves that move them.

Blended Spirits

Blended Spirits started in the Fall of 2005.  Judy and good friend, Beth Ihme had been doing duets that summer and having a great time.  Judy wanted to start a band that would do a variety of music.  The band had its growing pains and some changes were made as things progressed.  However, things were going well and continuing to progress as the band gained popularity and support.

In June of 2006 the band made a big turning point.  Judy had asked Danny Jamerson to set in for their lead guitar player.  Danny and Judy really clicked on stage and Judy hired Danny for the permanent lead guitar player and band leader.  It was a true and perfect "blend of two free spirits.”  Both of their musical styles and goals matched.  The band began to develop its own sound.

Danny and Judy play duets, both acoustic and with midi back up. With the midi back up the duet has a full band sound.  Danny and Beth Ihme were long time friends and Beth still joins the two of them to form an awesome trio. They play most of the same songs; the music is certainly danceable, just a little on the softer side. The five piece band totally rocks and is very powerful. The five piece band is the icing on the cake, with Judy and Danny on guitars and vocals, and Beth in the mix on keyboards and vocals.

It is the perfect blend of male and female hits, classic and current. They play everything from hard hitting rock to beautiful ballads--from a duet, to a full scale band done with a soulful, southern style that is all their own.
