Banff Mountain Film Festival Weekend
Friday night’s fan favorite Kranked – Revolve follows a high-adrenaline mountain bike journey from the French Alps to the lush coast of British Columbia, incorporating dirt jump, trail, freeride, slopestyle and downhill riding.
Experience the adventure of adrenaline-packed action sports, mountain expeditions, remote cultures, and the world’s last great wild places – all brought to life on the big screen – when the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to Brevard College’s Porter Center for Performing Arts Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20.
The two-day event, presented by Brevard College and Sycamore Cycles in conjunction with Brevard College’s Outing Club and Cycling Team, will feature award-winning films and audience favorites from hundreds of films entered in the annual festival in Banff Alberta, Canada.
Each evening will feature a different set of films. A complete listing of the festival’s lineup and brief description of each film being shown is available online at www.brevard.edu/banff.
Tickets are $10 each showing or $15 for both nights. They may be purchased from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday by calling (828) 884-8330 or by visiting the Porter Center Box Office in person. Tickets are also available at Looking Glass Outfitters in Pisgah Forest and at Mast General Stores in Hendersonville and Asheville.
The film festival doors will open at 6 p.m. each night to give patrons an opportunity to interact with this year’s sponsors. The film showings will begin at 7 p.m.

In conjunction with the film festival, Brevard and Transylvania County are offering many outdoor events for a fun and exciting weekend – from fly fishing, canoe trips, bike rides, to rock climbing clinics and art events.

Description: Pura Vida Adventures has brought canyoneering to the Eastern United States now experience waterfall rappelling for yourself. This is our full day canyoneering experience. Participants should be in good physical shape and consistently maintain a high level of fitness. This trip is 7-9 hours of climbing, rappelling, bouldering, and full on adventure. This program includes the waterfall rappels pictured in National Geographic Adventure Magazine. Limit of six participants.

American Canoe Association Swiftwater Rescue Courses

Description: These one and two day courses are designed to provide you with competence and confidence on whitewater. Topics include, but are not limited to, outfitting, water reading, paddling techniques, rescue of a capsized boat, portaging, identifying river hazards, rope throw, stabilization lines, and whitewater swimming. We also offer paddling courses that focus on sea kayak instruction and self rescue techniques.
Fee: One Day Course: $125 per person (minimum of 2 people/ maximum of 6 people). Two Day Course: Course includes a paddling trip (inflatable kayak) on the Upper Green River or Section 9 of the French Broad River (up to class IV rapids) where we will learn and apply required skills throughout the day. $250 per person (minimum of 2 people/ maximum of 6 people).

Pisgah Fly Masters Fly Fishing Tournament
Davidson River Outfitters and Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education
Description: The Pisgah Fly Masters, a fly fishing tournament that benefits wildlife education and programs about trout fishing, returns for a third year with the addition of a professional category. On March 20, entrants will test their casting skills at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, with top finishers advancing to a catch-and-release fishing competition on March 21 along a private stretch of the Davidson River. The new category for professionals is for anyone who has worked in the fly fishing industry within the past 10 years or is a member of a state or national fly fishing team. A youth category is open to ages 10 to 15. Nonprofessional anglers 16 and older will compete in the fisherman category. All money raised will go toward programming at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, which hosts the event. Davidson River Outfitters of Brevard sponsors the event.
Fee: Early registration to enter the competition ends on March 3, with fees of $30 for youth and $50 for adults. After March 3, fees are $50 for youth and $75 for adults.

Description: Enjoy a community bike ride on the beautiful back roads of Transylvania County. The course will venture along the beautiful headwaters of the French Broad River. This is a roughly 30 mile unsupported ride open to all ability levels. Helmets are required. Riders will leave from the Porter Center for Performing Arts Amphitheater on the campus of Brevard College.

Description: Buy and sell used outdoor gear during a Community Gear Swap at the Porter Center for Performing Arts Amphitheater on the campus of Brevard College. Anyone may bring and/or buy outdoor gear without having to use a computer or a middle man. Just show up and spread out your goods (please bring a table or tarp) in the amphitheater just outside the entrance of the Porter Center. Brevard College is offering the space to sellers for free as a community building event. This will be an excellent chance to get a good price on used outdoor gear. Sycamore Cycles will be offering a free bike maintenance clinic at 9 a.m. and Headwaters Outfitters will be offering a free cold weather paddling clinic at 1 p.m.
